(Page 1 of 4) Once again, we’ve called on expert Mark Futch to give us some background information on the use of the Maule in this movie. Mark worked with Stunt Coordinator / Pilot Craig Hoskins, one of the foremost aerial stunt coordinators in Hollywood. Also working with Mark on the film was Geo Hindall. Geo (pronounced Joe) was the seaplane technician who developed the rig to detach the amphibious float during the aerial fight scenes.

Who’d leave a rental Maule sitting around out in the middle of the bay in St. Martin with the keys in it? They never explain this in the movie, but Geiger (Willem Dafoe) has kidnapped Annie (Sandra Bullock), and is forcing her to go with him as hostage. That’s them approaching in the jet-ski / boat.
Geiger forces Annie into the plane, trying to escape with the moneybag. This plane is an M-6-235 with EDO 2500 amphibious floats that was procured from Canada for the shoot. The Maule was chosen for this film for it’s slow flight characteristics and good handling. The U-Rent U-Fly lettering was added for the film, probably to try and explain the plane’s presence.
Alex (Jason Patric), in an attempt to rescue girlfriend Annie from the villain, has commandeered a boat, which happens to belong to the same guy who got his car commandeered in the first Speed movie. Using a motorized fishing rod, he speared the float and pulled himself through the water and onto the plane before takeoff.
Patric’s character climbs into the cockpit, punching Dafoe’s lights out, and rescuing Sandra Bullock. According to Mark, many owners in warm climates leave the doors off their planes. Having them off for this movie simplified shooting, because of the cockpit action scenes.
