Maule in the movies
Cannonball Run (1981)
Director: Hal Needham
Starring: Burt Reynolds (J.J. McClure) Dom DeLuise (Victor/Captain Chaos) plus an all-star cast
A wild and illegal cross-country car race, known as the Cannonball Run, attracts all sorts of eccentric entrants who will do anything to win, including low-down, dirty tricks. In this movie, Burt Reynolds plays an adventurer participating in the race, with sidekick played by Dom DeLuise. There is an all-star cast of racers (Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett, Peter Fonda, Dean Martin, Roger Moore, Sammy Davis Jr. and others) that will do anything to outrun the police and win the race. The Maule plane appears early in the film, flown by Reynold's character J.J. McClure. He and sidekick Victor decide to land in a small Georgia town (literally!) to pick up some beer. The stunt sets the tone for the wild and crazy nature of the film. This sequence truly shows the capabilities of the Maule M-5, and remains some of the most spectacular footage ever shot of what a Maule can do! Anyone shopping for a Maule should see this scene!
Gone Fishin' (1997)
Directed by: Christopher Cain
Starring: Danny Glover (Gus Green), Joe Pesci (Joe Waters), Rosanna Arquette (Rita), Nick Brimble (Dekker Massey)
In this whopper of a fish tale, a pair of bumbling best friends on a doomed fishing trip in the Everglades manage not to catch any fish, but they do manage to land a dangerous criminal! Joe (Joe Pesci) and Gus (Danny Glover) are shown early-on as two of life's losers. As children, they accidenally blow up a factory. Years later as adults, they get to go on a fishing vacation, which of course, goes wildly wrong. First, they are conned out of their car keys by a con-man killer (Nick Brimble), who preys on older women. As they give pursuit, they team up with two young women (Rosanna Arquette, Lynn Whitfield) who are also after the killer for taking all of Arquette's mother's jewelry & money. Many disasters later, Joe and Gus chase down Dekker Massey in an exciting airboat chase. Finally, these fishermen really do some fishing, managing to "hook" the crook, and reel him in - right off the float of a Maule during takeoff!
Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997)
Director: Jan de Bont
Starring: Sandra Bullock (Annie Porter), Jason Patric (Officer Alex Shaw) Willem Dafoe (John Geiger)
Annie Porter (Sandra Bullock) and her policeman boyfriend Alex (Jason Patric) decide to take a romantic ocean cruise together (guess things didn't work out with Keanu). Once at sea, one of the passengers, a disgruntled computer genius named Geiger (Willem Dafoe), disables the ship. Alex must now foil Geiger's plans and bring everyone back safely to shore, but how can he outwit a man who can control the entire ship from his keyboard? The Maule plane appears in this movie on amphib floats, and has some great scenes. It even blows up! What more could a Maule fan ask for?
